Aliens in America: The Power of Prayer

Aliens in America gave us a Very Special Christmas Episode, and it didn’t disappoint. We’re constantly amazed at how this show can be so bitingly funny while keeping a core of sweetness. It’s good stuff.

We loved how Raja’s innocent remark that the Tolchucks' weekly trip to the big-box store was like their version of church prompted Franny freak out – it can’t be comfortable for someone who thinks of herself as spiritual to be confronted with that. Franny being Franny, she of course decides the family is going to church, now! If only they could remember where it is.

Of course, they manage to find a church that allows them to combine their love of shopping with the love of that Jesus guy. How convenient to be able to get salvation, coffee and collectible plates all in the same place!

We also loved how Justin managed to take precisely the wrong message from their church-going expedition, and decides the power of prayer can be used to stop bullies, avoid tests and maybe get laid! The look on Raja’s face when Justin told him about Dooley snaking his prayer to have sex with a school hottie was priceless. We’ll never know how Raja restrains himself from running screaming into the night every time he talks to Justin.

Finally, Franny bribing Claire to join the mega-church’s chastity club by promising to give her the Pill for Christmas was outright hysterical. How could she think that was a good idea? Of course, Claire finds someone to make out with in the chastity club (“I’m just here so my parents will buy me a car.” “What kind?”). But Claire had the last laugh – there’s nothing like showing your parents what you’d look like pregnant to give them a nudge. Everybody got what they wanted for Christmas.
