Smallville Talkback: Arrows and Bats

Last week, all of you Smallville fans blew up the comments section and hashed out a good deal of great theories and ideas. This week, we would like to hear just as much from you, but on an entirely different topic. Many of you have commented that one of your favorite current stories on Smallville is the Justice League. We keep getting tastes of them: they’re here taking down Luthercorp strongholds, they disband to keep low profiles, they begin reforming but the Doomsday storyline completely dwarfs them, etc. But let’s go back to the formation of the team by Oliver “Ollie” Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow. Since Smallville is based on the DC Comics’ Superman storyline, how did you feel when Green Arrow founded the Justice League rather than the Man of Steel? A little research on the comic history shows that Green Arrow had to be convinced joining such a team was not “soulless”. With no slight to Justin Hartley’s portrayal of Green Arrow (he is very convincing as a guy trying to do the right thing but without Clark’s cumbersome ethics), does this deviation work for you?

We’ll use this to segue into another idea we mentioned in two different polls from past weeks: Batman (or other Justice League members). When asked who you thought would be the next Justice League member to make an appearance on the show, the votes were almost evenly split between Batman and Green Lantern. The following week, when asked if we would ever see Batman on Smallville, the overwhelming choice was, “Never happen -- the movie franchise is too strong, and they won't release the character.”

Now, it would be very hard to argue against a Batman cameo on Smallville being incredibly cool (we’re talking about two of DC’s most iconic heroes fighting crime together…on TV!), but is it realistic in the context of Smallville? That being said, is anyone up for a Wonder Woman appearance? Due to many of last week’s posts, we wonder how devoted to the comic storyline Smallville should stay. Does the departure from the original members and creation of the Justice League make fans’ blood boil in the same way as Clark Kent’s love destiny?

And lastly, before the next four weeks of new episodes (!!!), let’s do an insanely quick recap of Season 8 so far:

Oliver finds a powerless Clark in Russia, but John Jones restores Clark’s powers at the price of his own. We’re introduced to Davis Bloome (Doomsday) through Chloe’s care for Bette, an explosive lady. Oliver’s ability with the bow is revealed while Tess Mercer’s evil nature is revealed. The Fortress of Solitude’s crystal attracts a sexed-up alien, Maxima, but Clark sends her packing. Lois confesses to loving Clark, but then covers it as a lie. Davis begins realizing he might be a serial killer. Jimmy Olsen almost uncovers Clark’s secret and Chloe kills Sebastian Kane to hide Clark’s identity. Lois is possessed by Zod’s wife, Faora, but Kara solves this problem and leaves. Brainiac leaves Chloe’s body and infects the Fortress and Davis tells Chloe he loves her. Lana returns, Jimmy is almost killed by Doomsday during his wedding, and bride Chloe is taken to the Fortress. The Legion saves Clark and Chloe and gives Clark a ring. Clark and Oliver have mild issues with the police. Lana gets superpowers via Lex Luthor’s Prometheus alien suit, which ends up absorbing kryptonite and ending any possibility for her and Clark to be together. Linda Lake’s attempt to blackmail Clark is foiled by Lois writing his story of being the Red-Blue Blur, but then it’s all erased when Clark uses the Legion ring to go back in time. Tess tries to reveal Clark’s true identity but fails and Jimmy splits with Chloe after she tazes him over Davis. Zatanna grants Chloe’s wish to be Lois and Clark’s wish to be “normal” and tries to kill herself to bring back her father, but Clark stops it all. The last new episode showed us the history of Davis along with his attempt to die by kryptonite, only to come back stronger.

Whew!

smallville is the best

In the 80's I was sort of a Lois and Clark fan...but in the back of my mind- I felt he could do better. When smallville came alone...I felt that Lana and Clark where made for each other...and it was time for a change from Lois and Clark... but then just recently I started to see the trueist and most pure love that clark will ever have, and that is with and from Chole...even if the show leaves the air for good...why not give us what we all seek...the love/bond of Clark and Chole...until the show is over....I want to see him with someone who truely loves him for the man he is now and will one day be...even as it means the end of SMALLVILLE....

In the Doomsday episode finale for this season, is Chloe gonna die trying to save Clark by healing him when Doomsday kills him while Lana returns and sends Doomsday to exile with her powers?...Just guessing how the plot would play out....

I thought that the Green Arrow having to be convinced to join in the comics was a ruse as he was the one funding the Justice League prior to Batman being the financial backing, although i could be wildly inaccurate.

Although, who cares if what Smallville is doing isn't 'canon'? It's not like DC have ever kept a storyline for a team or character exactly the same for their entirety, origin stories evolve and change over time and as long as the story is entertaining then it is fine with me

Get rid of that old Lois. The viewers gag whenever Lois shows her phony face and her fake body. she is a total useless joke

Smallville's JL is different than the comics, cartoons (my real point of reference) but it still works since Smallville is a reinterpretation of the whole Superman/Justice League anyway. I would like some more permanent members besides Clark and Ollie. I do love MM and Cyborg was great.

Your recap was interesting, but incomplete,I know, hard to fit it all in, but there were a few things that needed to be included. Just to get it out of the way, Brainiac killed Sebatian, that's what I saw and what Chloe said, I believe her more than that blackmailing jerk Oliver right now.

Also I think Chloe being studied by Lex's team and Clark going to rescue her was a big part of the opener since we meet Tess and find out about Brainiac's effect on Chloe's mind. Clark almost magically gets hired by the DP (Did Zantana drop by earlier than I remember?) Lois sees him in a suit (for the umpteenth time) and this time falls for him or at least his suits. (See Bride and the intimate scene between said suit and Lois--get a room) Chloe dumps 7 years of characterization and goes, "Oh, just because all I've ever hoped for and dreamed of has been wrapped up in journalism for pretty much my entire life, what the hell, let's try something new--Go Meteor Freaks!" Lois and Clark go a walking in the PZ and Clark is reminded he has a cousin who is missing. Chloe saves Clark and Kara by hemorrhaging from the brain - no thanks needed (or given) Lois gets a raise after knocking Tess around as Faora but is secure in her knowledge that she earned her cash. Jimmy uncovers the RBB, making Lois look useless ...again, but she continues to lust after Clark (ooh he zipped me up while I insulted him-hot!) Brainiac kicks his plan into high gear, forcing Clark to bring Chloe (and her passenger) to the Fortress (where he proves what a dick Superman can really be by lobotimizing his best friend as a wedding gift--run Chloe!) Oliver has KILL LEX on the brain because he found out that Lionel killed his parents (so blame the son, how Greek of you) but Lana thinks she talks some sense into him (sigh, just why?) and then comes LATE to Chloe's barn wedding (IT WAS IN THE BARN WHERE CLARK MUCKS OUT THE STALLS--IT WAS IN A BARN!!!!) Doomsday also hated the theme wedding (Love and manure is in the air?)exprsses his outrage for the crappy venue and takes a door prize to the Fortress where Chloiac is marvelously creepy and the Legion is marvelously fun. Clark rants about never killing so that he can look like an epic douche (or is that Iconic douche?)by the time Lana leaves and and epic idiot for not getting that the ultimate destroyer of everything probably should not be kept as a pet. (We should have been brothers. Huh?) On the bright side Jimmy and Chloe finally broke up for good. (PLEASE!) and is a pill popping junkie has quit the Planet. Next week, SUPER!SHOE! but don't dispair, the rest of the season sounds awesome. (No really, Beast, Injustice and Doomsday do sound awesome)

I think that it is good to have the Green Arrow start the Justice League. If he didn't, then Clark would have to. Then we probably wouldn't see it in the show (because it would be Superman creating it and they said "Superman" will never be on the show). Also, I like that Green Arrow starting the Justice League has reinvigorated the Chloe character and given her more importance. Also, I think it creates a good spin off idea, which would be so cool.

I think I would like to see some female Leaguer come into the picture, I don't really care who. Because I think Clark being attracted to someone else in front of Lois will make her jealous and bring them closer to becoming a couple.

The Green Arrow is Smallville's version of Batman. There is no reason to go after the real thing at this point. (Especially since there's no way we'd get him) I also hesitate to want Wonder Woman. I think Clark needs to become Superman before he meets individuals that are equally as powerful as he is. Besides, (snort) that's Lana Lang right now.

In your recap left out Chloe aquiring super intelligence via Brainiac being in her mind and that HE was the one that had her kill Sebastian (just because Oliver was trying to excuse his murder of Lex doesn't mean that Chloe wasn't being truthful, just feeling guilty and unsure) and you also left out that big horse puckey move on Clark where he violated her trust and wiped out all her knowledge of her own heroic acts along with knowledge of Clark's secret. That was a pretty big arc this season.
