Supernatural: Death, Doom and Betrayal

The Boys and their Bad Advisors
Wow. Kripke really likes torturing us, doesn't he? The Supernatural season ended with everyone betrayed -- by angels, by demons, and even by their own better instincts. They boys have learned they can't necessarily trust themselves -- but they can rely on each other. Now we've just got to hope we can rely on them to save the world from Armageddon. In the meantime, we'll be hiding in the closet, sniffling and feeling heartbroken for those poor, poor boys...

The boys went their separate ways last week, and they're still feeling the aftereffects. While Ruby tried to comfort Sam -- buck up, camper, you'll make up afterwards! -- Awesome Bobby awesomely tore Dean a new one, which was awesome. After Dean refused to call Sam to try to make up, BOBBY SMASH!

You stupid, stupid son of a bitch! Well boo-hoo, I'm so sorry your feelings are hurt, PRINCESS. Are you under the impression that family is supposed to make you feel GOOD? Bake you an apple pie, maybe? They're SUPPOSED to make you miserable, that's why they're family!....You sound like a whiny brat. No, you sound like your dad. Well let me tell you something. You dad was a coward. ... He'd rather push Sam away than reach out to him. Well that don't strike me as brave. You are a better man than your daddy ever was. So you do us both a favor: Don't be him.

See what we mean? Awesome.

Alas, that's the last we see of Bobby, because Dean is whisked away to a white-and-gold room, where Zachariah and Castiel are waiting to ply him with pleasures. Actually, Cass is silent, but Zachariah is positively effusive. He offers Dean beer, burgers, and the illicit pleasures of Ginger and Mary-Ann from Gilligan's Island. What he doesn't offer is answers, no matter how much Dean asks. Don’t you worry your pretty little head, he tells Dean -- we'll let you know when we need you.

Dean kills some time by leaving Sam a message:

I'm still pissed, and I owe you a serious beatdown, but... sigh.. I shouldn't have said what I said. I'm not dad. We're brothers, you know, we're family, and no matter how bad it gets, that doesn't change. Sammy I'm sorry.
But Sam just can't face listening to what Dean has to say -- what if it's bad? So instead, he goes along with Ruby, catching Lilith's "personal chef" and torturing Lilith's location out of her. She begs for death, and Sam is willing to oblige -- but Ruby says they'll need her for a blood borne power-boost when it comes time to fight Lilith. The demon is pissed -- Sam promised! -- and she fights back the only way she knows how: She retreats into her host's brain, and lets the terrified, innocent human come out. Cindy McClellan begs Sam to help her, but he just throws her in the trunk of his car. He and Ruby listen to her scream and cry and beg all the way to Maryland.

They're heading to a ruined church where, in 1972, a priest went nuts and disemboweled eight nuns. The priest was possessed by Azazel -- Old Yellow Eyes himself -- and he was looking to release his "Daddy" -- Lucifer. The gate to the cage where Lucifer was imprisoned was right there, under the convent (or "nun factory," as Azazel calls it.) After slaughtering the nuns, Azazel learns what he has to do to release Lucifer: he needs Lilith -- and a child.

Meanwhile, Dean is getting increasingly antsy, wanting to find Sam. Finally, Zachariah appears and breaks the news: We want Lilith to break the seal. The apocalypse is just the final war between Heaven and Hell, and Zachariah and the "senior management" is convinced that Heaven can win. So bring it! Dean is important -- he's the one who will kill Lucifer. But he's not going to stop Lilith, and he's not going to talk to Sam. That's final. And where's God in all of this? "God? God has left the building," Zachariah says.

When Castiel comes to apologize, Dean lays into him. Castiel seems abashed, but unmoved, even after Dean punches him (Note: Punching an angel leads to a ringing sound and a seriously hurt hand.) But something Dean said got through, because Cass shows up later and makes the Angel-B-Gone sign with his own blood. (Yay! OUR Castiel is back!) He tells Dean that he has to stop Sam -- Lilith herself if the last seal. If Sam kills her, he opens the gate and Lucifer comes out. Then he takes Dean to the Prophet Chuck (who is ordering a whole lot of female companionship for his last night before the world ends) and finds out where Sam is. Castiel sends Dean along and stays with Chuck to face the Archangel. Will he survive? We don't know.

Sam is at a crossroads -- he needs to drain the nurse if he's going to be strong enough to take Lilith, but he doesn't want to suck blood from a screaming human, even if the demon is hiding inside her. He wonders if maybe Dean was right about this -- and he finally steels the courage to listen to Dean's voicemail. But it's not the message Dean left. Zachariah altered it to give Sam a little push. This is what Sam hears:

Listen to me, your bloodsucking freak! Dad always said I'd either have to save you or kill you. Well, I'm giving you fair warning: I'm done trying to save you. You're a monster Sam, a vampire. You're not you anymore. And there's no going back.
And since Sam has nothing left to go back to, he decides to jump into the breach. He drains the girl and goes after Lilith. Dean arrives just in time to see Sam and Ruby confront her, but Ruby slams the door before Dean can enter. Sam works his mojo... and then hears Dean screaming for him, and stops. Lilith laughs -- "You turned yourself into a freak, a monster, and now you're not going to bite? I'm sorry, but that is honestly adorable." And that's enough to tip the balance. Sam kills her. Her blood runs out and rings the floor. Sam stares, confused, as Ruby celebrates:
Ruby: I can't believe it. You did it.
Sam: What? What did I do?
Ruby:You opened the door, and how he's free at last!
SamI killed her!
Ruby:And it is written, that the first demon will be the last seal. And you busted her open, now guess who's coming to dinner.
Samoh my god.
Ruby:Guess again!
It gets worse: Sam accuses Ruby of poisoning him with her blood, but she denies it:
No, it wasn't the blood -- it was you, and your choices. I just gave you the options and you chose the right path every time. [Pause] You didn't need the feather to fly, you had it in you the whole time, Dumbo!
Dean finally bursts in and sees it's too late. At least he has time to kill Ruby -- and this time, Sam no only doesn't stop him, he holds Ruby while Dean stabs. Sam begs Dean to forgive him, and Dean begs Sammy to make a run for it. Light pours from the floor as the church rumbles and cracks. "Dean," Sam says, despairing, "He's coming."

And that's it, folks. Lucifer is, in fact, rising, and the boys made it possible -- Dean by breaking the first seal, and Sam by breaking the last. How will they live with that knowledge? And how will WE live with the wait until season five?

I have some questions. How come Sam had to kill Lilith. Why didn't she just use Ruby's knife(which probably wouldn't kill her since it didn't kill Alaster) or the colt. Also what if Sam had killed her not at Saint Mary's convent or she didn't do what ever she was doing there before the convent. Would Lucifer get set free. Also what f the host was alive would that blood have come out of Lilith's mouth. Also where is the colt now that Lilith is dead. How does the demon blood do anythng. It's not there blood, it's the human host blood does it get infected when possessed?

I am sorry but i am really really really really really really really really really really this will go on for ever that Ruby was bad!!! I so wanted Ruby to be good!!!!

I have many reasons why Ruby shouldn't have been bad. They made Dean's instinct of racism right. Angles who are suppose to be good can be bad and all demons are bad so it's like there's more bad in the world. She also seemed so good saving Dean willing to sacrafice herself in Jus in Bello she was helping them kill Lilith in season 3 and in I know what you did last summer she just seemed so good and she also didn't want to come between Sam and Dean in the premier. How wold that help break the seals if Sam wasn't going to kill Lilith! Why she was ever saving Anna or Dean! Yes I do realize that she was going to turn Anna to the demons, but still Erick Krippple was stupid to make Ruby bad.

Why did all of you or most of you assume Ruby is bad? Just because she's a demon? Why did Kripple make Ruby bad in the end. Because She's a demon? There is one word for that. RACIST. You didn't like her in the begining because she's a demon. I'm sorry but your all racist. WHy do all demons have to be bad. Also why do they worship Lucifer if they were human. Even bad humans don't worship Lucifer. If angels can be bad, why can't demons be good? I'm sorry but most of you r racist!!!!!

You know what would be interesting? If Ruby was working for the angels. If the angels accepted Ruby was good and told her why the wanted lucifer to rise and told Sam she was loyal to lucifer because she knew Sam wouldn't believe her if she told him the truth.

If God has left the building, I have left the show. You've lost me, Kripke, with one line.

also soryy for these critisisims but how come Sma's eyes went deamon eyes when he killed lilith if they didn't go like that when he killed Alister. He's clearly more powerful than Lilith because he's amune to Ruby's knife and Lilith always tries to run from it. Also she evidently was telling the truth about not surviving the apocalypse.

Also one question. How come all this deamon stuff is happening in America, like where yellow eyes had all his sikicks or will Lucifer is suppose to et free, they didn't even have America back than when Lucifer was supposedly trapped. Or will the devil gate is and how come all the angels and deamons speak english.

Oh great job Erik Kripple. Make Deans instinct of racism right!!!!!! What you shown is that racism is good and there's more bad in the world, like angels who are suppose to be good can be bad!!!! Also if Ruby was really bad I wish they would of revealed it in season 3. Also if Lilith and Ruby were planning this all along, why did Lilith always try to kill Sam, in jus in Bello how come Ruby was willing to sacrafise herself. Why was she saving Anna. Why was she saving Dean. What did Lilith really do to her in the season 3 finalie. Really Erick Kripple I really wanted Ruby to be good, can you make turn out that someone was inpersonating Ruby like since the penultimate of season 4 it would be a different deamon.

i wonder what will happen to cas!!! i think thats one of the biggest parts of the cliffhanger.

the sourcies need that part of lucifer rising where dean convinces cas to help. that scene was totally stellar! i couldn't believe how amazingly jensen ackles and misha collins pulled off their parts respectively. they were awesome. i just gotta shout that scene out. it was one of my all time favorites from season 4!!

i really liked ruby, it wouldnt hav been the same without her. i didnt want ruby 2 turn bad at the end so she wud hav 2 die like that but oh well! i liked the rest of it though. im sure the next season is gonna be good. xxxchelxxx

Awesome finale. The fact that Ruby kicked it just makes me sleep better at night. I dunno what else to say except hurry up with epi 1 of season 5. ;)

damn the cliffhanger (it was awesome i just have little patience. i want season 5 to start now!)!! im going to be dying for new eps of supernatural throughout the entire summer!!

and the dvd wont come out for a while. thats a bummer.

my favorite part was the part where dean brought back cas from being heaven's bitch. i hated how he always had to do gruntwork and get blamed for it especially when his superiors behind it (releasing sam, and anna hella told him off -__-).

that was a crazy good episode. i loved it to DEATH. good thing ruby is gone. i hated her. but i was hoping she would be alastair treatment for deceiving sam.

'yeah well, we're making it up as we go.' Cas!! that was one of the best lines ever! i agree - should be in a angelic quote poll. along with 'uriel is the funniest angel in the garrison.' oh goodness misha, you are the best angel ever.

thank you kripke. you rock!! and u ppl working at the cwsource. you guys are so lucky to meet the people working to make supernatural the amazing show it is today.

i love supernatural nd i hope it never endz nd i cant wait until it comes back on me and my friend just cant stop talkin about it

So much love for this ep! I can't WAIT for season 5!!

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this season finale! Bobby ripped Dean a new one, sending him back to Sam, Ruby got what she deserved after daring to deceive Sam, Dean showed Castiel how much fun it is to put one over on Zachariah and the Winchester brothers stood side by side, awaiting the arrival of Lucifer. I can't wait for season 5 to begin! Thanks to Kripke, Jared, Jensen and the rest of the wonderful actors, actresses, writers, directors and crew that brought us this phenomenal season of SUPERNATURAL!!

Love, Robin

''Yeah, well, we're making it up as we go.''

Since Castiel says this, shouldn't it be among the Best *Angelic* Quotes? I'd *definitely* have voted for it!!

Great episode! just amazing. I might die of sadness on this wait. I just dont think i'll be able too!

that was soooooo freaking amazing. no other season finale from other shows is gonna top this.
