Supernatural: The Beginning of the End?

Cold Turkey
Oof, Sam's detox is rough -- he hallucinates visitors who do some pretty horrible things. They're all in his mind, of course, so the physical damage he imagines -- Alastair carving him up, for example -- goes away. But the psychological hurt from what these specters of his subconscious say to him? That sticks around.
Li’l Sam appears and accuses grown-up Sam of screwing everything up, then flashes Yellow-Eyed Demon eyes to show the monster that's always been inside of him. Mama Winchester makes an appearance, and tells Sam that he's right -- he's doing what needs to be done, and Dean doesn't understand because he's scared and weak.
The worst is a visit from hallucinatory Dean himself, while Sam is chained to the bed (which is what happens when demon detox causes seizures and being flung five feet up and dragged across the walls). It starts off sympathetic, and we think he's the real Dean. But it gets darker -- you're not drinking demon blood for a good cause. You're doing it because you want to feel strong, invincible, "a big bad wolf in a world of little pigs." But you're a monster, Sam, hallucinatory Dean says.
Figment Dean: Sam, you're a monster! And I tried so hard to pretend we were brothers, that you weren't one of the filthy things that we hunt. We're not even the same species! You're nothing to me!
Sam pleads with Dean to take it back, but Dean disappears. It wasn't real, but the scars remain.
Those who wait
It's not much better for Dean and Bobby. Sure, they're not going through the demon DTs, but they can hear every scream and shriek and plea from Sam echoing up the stairs. They're in their own hell waiting for Sam to recover -- if he recovers at all.
Dean goes to Castiel, who remains cold and aloof. Yeah, Sam may be able to destroy Lilith, but only if he consumes enough demon blood to become something irredeemable himself. But…
Castiel: there's no reason this would have to come to pass, Dean. We believe it's you Dean, not your brother. The only question for us is whether you're willing to accept it. Stand up and accept your role. You are the one who will stop it.
Dean: If I do this, Sammy doesn't have to?
Castiel: If it gives you comfort to see it that way.
Dean: You're a dick these days.[Pause] Fine, I'm in.
And that’s what it takes to get Dean to “give [himself] over wholly to the service of god and his angels.”
Bobby is incredulous that Dean agreed to that, and he makes his displeasure known. But what else could Dean do? Bobby is also wondering whether this demon detox is a good idea. First, maybe they should be using Sam to prevent the apocalypse. Second, the detox is killing him, and if they don't give Sam more blood, he may not survive. Dean refuses. If Sam dies, at least he dies human.
Betrayal
And here's where things take a turn: Castiel uses his angel mojo to set Sam free. Gah! Why? Bobby finds Sam outside and tries to take him back in with the help of a shotgun, but Sam knows Bobby won't shoot. So Sam knocks Bobby out with the shotgun butt (Ah! Sam! Hurt not The Bobby, for The Bobby is Awesome!). And now the chase is on.
Sam gets back with Ruby, who gives him his fix, then tells him he's going to need more than she can give. She's also got intel: The last seal can only be broken by Lucifer's first, the first human corrupted into a demon. Sam assumes that's Lilith, but we're not so sure. Also, Ruby has a lead on Lilith's "personal chef" -- a demon who kidnaps newborn babies. Urg.
Meanwhile, Anna confronts Castiel about letting Sam go. I was following orders, he says. Anna is incredulous, but then she's incarcerated -- two more angels come and take her to the celestial pokey.
Dean tracks Sam down, and they try to talk. Dean wants to kill Ruby for what she did to Sam, but Sam won't allow it. I need her to help me kill Lilith! And here's where things go straight to hell:
Sam: Maybe one day you'll understand. I'm the only one who can do this, Dean.
Dean: No. You're not the one who's going to do this.
Sam: Right, I forgot, the angels think it's you.
Dean: You don't think I can?
Sam: No, you can't. You're not strong enough.
Dean: And who the hell are you?
Sam: I'm being practical here. I'm doing what needs to be done.
Dean: Yeah, you're not going to do a single damn thing.
Sam: Stop bossing me around, Dean! Look, my whole life you take the wheel, you call the shots, and I trust you because you are my brother. And now, I'm asking you, for once, trust me.
Dean: No. You don't know what you're doing, Sam.
Sam: Yes, I do!
Dean: Then that's worse!
Sam: Why?
Dean: Because it's not something that you're doing, it's what you are! It means...
Sam: What? Say it!
Dean: It means you're a monster.
And there it is -- Sam's worst fear, made flesh. Dean's whole life feeling not good enough boiling out when Sam suggested -- with the best of motives -- that he wasn't up to the challenge. And because no one can push your buttons like family, that's was enough to send them over the edge. The boys fight, brutally, and for once, Sam gets the upper hand. He chokes Dean -- doubtless thinking it's about time Dean got choked for a change! -- then relents.
Sam: You don't know me! You never did. And you never will. And Sam walks. They've gone too far. They're broken. They stepped off the edge of the cliff, and who knows what will happen when they reach the ground. We're guessing it's going to be very, very messy, and painful for all. And we can’t wait to watch.
Dean: You walk out that door, don't you ever come back!

I KNOW RIGHT!! i was thinking about that exact quote from season 1 and also from season 2 playthings when sam was drunk. he made dean promise to 'stop' him if he ever became something he isn't.

i am soooo excited for the season finale. its totally going to be epic. i deunno how kripke is gonna pull off a more insane cliffhanger than the last, but he's known to surprise me on multiple occasions (which is hard for me) kudos to the supernatural team! this is the only tv show i've loved since season 1 and are still sooo devoted to it.

This is really all I could think of by the end of the episode:
Sam: Aren't you worried, man, aren't you worried that I could turn into Max or something?
Dean: Nope. No way. You know why?
Sam: No. Why?
Dean: Cause you've got one advantage that Max didn't have.
Sam: Dad? Because Dad's not here, Dean.
Dean: No. Me. As long as I'm around, nothing bad is gonna happen to you.
Boys =[

Jared was absolutely brilliant, and it's refreshing to see his acting surpass Jensen's. It makes me look forward even more to whatever future projects Jared signs on for.

ok, Loved the ep, BUT- As a mom who lost one of her children...I did NOT appreciate a newborn being a meal for Lilith. I for one would definatly appreciate not hearing or having the visual of this again.

I agree with Jenna on this one. I found the two fights eerily similar. I really hope this isn't the end for the brothers... It looks that way.
I found this episode heartbreaking and painful. The brothers finally let it all out, leading to their horrible end. The Sam Demon Detox was one of the hardest things to watch. All the hallucinations really hit home, especially the Mary Winchester and Dean ones. I found myself shaking with Sam's unimaginable pain.
And then there's Deans dilemma. All he wanted was his brother back. The whole "At least he dies human!" was heartbreaking. Dean has always been Sam's protecter and now seeing him finally give up was totally and utterly mind numbing. I just want him and Sam to be brothers again. Before all the Angels and Demon Blood and Ruby drama. I miss my boys...
So overall, a fantastic, fabulous, heartbreaking, saddening, foreboding, and painful episode. Look forward to the finale. It's gonna be one LONG summer... No idea how I will get through it. But the Sourcies will help.

I don't think the fights were at all similar.
How is there any possible comparison between Sam wanting to go to college on a full ride and trying to choke Dean after almost 2 seasons of lying to Dean constantly and this season sneaking around on him and just generally treating him like he's a weak little burden?
I don't understand how the situations can even begin to be compared. Dean used the same words but in the context Dean used them, they were not the result of someone who's pride was pissed off because they couldn't control their son from doing something perfectly within the realms of reason, even for a hunter. It was said by a brother who had already sacrificed everything and who constantly put Sam first after Sam tried to choke him.

oh my gosh... i'm still shaking from the intensity of last night's ep. sorry cw, but supernatural owns all other shows with this one episode.

This was one of the most painful episodes to watch since Devil's Trap in season one!
All those episodes where both of the brothers didn't say what they really thought just to protect the other were erased in ten minutes. They both let everything out and it broke my heart.
I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the Sam/Dean's fight this week and the Sam/John fight from season 1. Here's the quote I'm talking about:
Sam to John: "You were the one who said "Don’t come back," Dad. You’re the one who closed that door, not me! You were just pissed off you couldn’t control me anymore!"
Now Sam hates Dean for trying to stop him from using the demon blood to kill Lilith and Dean said "You walk out that door, don't you ever come back!"
And we all know how Sam and John's fights turned out. Sam left and didn't come back until Dean pulled them back together. So we have to wonder who will be able to pull Sam and Dean back together once this is all over. . .
