The Sourcies embrace the eeeeeeeeeeevil with Best Villain
If you listen to our podcasts, you know that we have a weakness for unrepentant, mustache-twirling eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil on our shows. Fortunately, The CW knows what we like, and they deliver villains galore. Now, we're not talking about boys with a tough attitude that conceals a heart of gold -- that's what the Bad Boys category is for. We're talking villains -- people who would happily eat your heart just because they were a bit peckish. You know, wicked.
But what flavor of wickedness do you go prefer? Machiavellian machinations? World-dominating supervillainy? Complete craziness? Sexual ensnarement? Honest-to-God end-of-the-world-we're-all-gonna-die destruction? There's so much to choose from! Take a look:
Who's the evilest of them all? Your votes decide! The poll is open until July 4 at 11:59 pm Central. One vote per person, and yes, we're enforcing that to the best of our ability. Feel free to share the poll, but send people back here to comment.
Oh, and a big congrats to Stefan and Elena from The Vampire Diaries, who handily won Hottest Moment. No one else was even close!

I adore both shows. Most evil?- Lucifer. But this is "Best Villain"- so i had to go for Katherine. She's the one you love to hate!
I'm also a Twilight hater- I liked the books, but the movies have completely killed it for me. TVD has so much going for it. I'm going to keep watching long after Breaking Dawn is dead and gone :)

@TMignone-- I am not judging TVD based on Twilight. I absolutely despise Twilight, but I have watched a few episodes of TVD. Just like you can not get into SPN, I cannot get into TVD. Maybe it is the fact that it is aimed at teenagers. I don't know.
I do know that TVD got it's chance because of Twilight. Before Twilight, there were hardly any teen vampire books (or shows) and now there is an explosion of them because the market knows they're going to sell. So, that's the reason TVD was turned into a show. It was known/hoped that everyone would go as crazy over this as everyone did over Twilight.
I am also curious as to whether there are fans here that have read the books and also enjoy the show. Looking on other sites, a lot of people who read the TVD books do not enjoy the show because it changed several things.

Yeah! Katherine rocks! I mean, I don't watch TVD because of Twilight Saga, actually, I hate that movie, and still I love TVD. I can't deny that Lucifer was a good villain. But come'n, Katherine has the evilness by her side too, sexier and exciting. Lucifer was so... simple... when he acted... like... whatever or something like that.
Posted by: Billy G | July 6, 2010 12:49 PM
I absolutely despise the entire Twilight series and I've never been into any of the other vampire shows/books out there. I wouldn't even watch TVD when it first came out, however, I was flipping channels one night and decided to see what it was all about and ended up falling in love with the show. It's probably the only show I watch on TV regularly.
I completely disagree with the comments that TVD will vanish with Twilight. Although TVD may have gotten its chance from Twilight, it has proved itself to be more than just standing on Twilight's shoulders. I know others like me who hate Twilight, yet love TVD. TVD has a storyline and amazing elements that make it stand on its own. TVD is more mature in every aspect than Twilight will ever be. You can't say for sure that TVD wouldn't be successful without Twilight, and perhaps if Twilight didn't exist when TVD came out, you'd be more interested in watching it. You should judge it based on itself, not based on things like Twilight.
As for Supernatural, I've watched plenty of episodes and I just can't ever seem to get into the show. Katherine has my vote because I think there is much more to her than this evil bitch that everyone thinks she is. We shall see.

Matt
I TOTALLY AGREE! I don't hate TVD either but I am annoyed at how this show probably couldn't stand on its own without the Twilight crap happening at the same time. Friends of mine who like it always want me to watch it cuz they know that Twilight is a crappily-written story about a love between vampires - and TVD actually has a better storyline and was written better. But even knowing that I'm hesitant to give TVD a chance. I love the supernatural aspect of shows, but I wasn't thrilled about the way this show had to stand on Twilight's shoulders to get a spot on a network. Take Buffy or the X Files. Those shows I deeply respect. And Smallville (beginning seasons anyway) and Supernatural didn't need to tween craze to make the show. Gotta give them respect for that too.
TVD granted probably has a better storyline than Twilight, but that is a troubling concept - once Twilight's over (cant wait until that it. to think it could ever replace something like harry potter xP) what will happen to the Vampire Diaries?
Posted by: Caleigh | July 5, 2010 7:13 PM
Katherine was just a bitch. Lucifer is a sympathetic villain that was way more relatable to the audience. Does a villain always have to be a heartless bitch who didn't actually do that much during the entire season? He got my vote.
w/e these polls are for whoever got the most fans. its understandable how katherine won...sorta

Haha. Katherine won by a smidge. Guess she wasn't really so far above Lucifer, huh?
It's not that I particularly hate TVD. I just hate that fact that it only has fans because of the Twilight craze. Face it. If Twilight had never became big, the TVD books never would have made it into a show.
TVD is just riding on Twilight's coattails, which is so stupid. What happens when Twilight is done and over? TVD will be done and over too.
No one is going to remember some vampire show made out of some vampire book because there are already a million more vampire shows made out of vampire books. And they're all better.

Lucifer on Supernatural wasn't a badass villain. He was whiny little baby. Katherine gets my vote.
Posted by: SPN Sux | July 4, 2010 12:03 AM
@ Karolina
Uhh what...? so Katherine doesn't have flaws? A villain or hero without flaws makes the storyline INSANELY boring and unrelatable to the audience. I'm pretty sure thats not the case.
And I've watched both TVD and Supernatural. Katherine while devious and heartless is undoubtedly evil, I'm not sure she can compare with Lucifer. Though not shown in the clip, Lucifer smited a room filled with demigods and killed the entire town of Carthage to raise the horseman, Death. (To the CWsource...why didn't you include that instead of Sarah and Jess? That was just weird when I saw you guys included that).
---
And aside from that, the two are very different villains in their own might so I'm not even sure if this poll really works for them. Katherine is just like evil evil evil as far as I can tell (I missed a few eps here so maybe I missed something). But Lucifer was written as the sympathetic villain - achieving his own means for what he believes that would better the world. He was cast down into Hell because he defended the angels and chose not to bow down to humanity.
To me, it just comes down to which would you prefer. A sympathetic villain or just one who seems flatout evil. For me, I chose Lucifer. Not only because of the smiting a whole town or the demigods, but because villains who have more depth just appeals to me more. And I didn't even include the 5 season long plan that Lucifer created when first assigning Azazel, Ruby, and Lilith to manipulate Sam Winchester all the way the end. Lucifer was the mastermind behind all of that (so to whoever who said he wasn't cunning... That was a damn well thought out plan)
Also, going back to the TVD ppl who think Lucifer is weak b/c Sam managed to grapple a hold on him - please make sure you understand the entire situation first. The only reason Sam was able to take over was because of his strong bond he had with Dean. Some of you who don't watch the show would think it still wouldn't be able to subdue one of the most powerful forces ever, but hey guess what - the concept of the bonds between brothers and family holding out above all else - if that doesn't do it, I really don't know what could.
I watch both shows, but I feel that objectively, Lucifer did more terrible things on a global scale and a posed as the greatest threat ever to the Winchesters. True, Azazel, Alastair etc may have been more clean-cut evil but Lucifer is the sympathetic evil. Katherine is a villain too, and a pretty bad ass one at that, but I still think Lucifer should win this one.

Katherine is the best one...we must to acept it.
Posted by: Stefita | July 3, 2010 12:59 AM
I definitely see where you're coming from. Still, I think of that final moment like this:
It's always been said (since episode...four of season one I think?) that possession works by finding the chinks in the armor and exploiting them. It's never been stated as far as I can remember - so correct me if I'm wrong - but I would assume that it would work in reverse.
At the time Sam took back control of his body Lucifer had to be PISSED and at least a little emotional. The brother he cared about most had outright called him a monster that needed to be killed, something that probably stung even worse when Dean showed up because he still believed in HIS brother even after everything Sam had done. So, while all these cracks were forming in Lucifer's defense, Sam's willpower was strengthening because all the doubt and anger inside him was vanishing because of Dean promising not to leave him and all the memories the Impala brought back to him. That's why I don't find Sam overthrowing Lucifer TOO unbelievable because, evil as he is, Lucifer still has emotions which makes him a sympathetic villain.
This is all speculation on my part, but it makes a lot of sense to me. As you said, it does seem pretty ridiculous that a human would be able to beat the devil, but it makes Sam's redemption that much more moving, which I think is what the writers were more worried about. Plus, I think if they made God suddenly pop out of nowhere and fix everything that would've cheapened the entire season for me.
On top of that, I liked that Lucifer had a real, solid motive for his villainy (even if it was an overblown temper tantrum) beyond "oh he's just crazy" or "he was just born an asshole" and that's all the explanation that's given. I'm not saying that's how all the other nominated villains are (apart from the clips I watched, I don't know jack squat about the others) but it was a nice change.
On a completely unrelated note: If there's a 'Most Heartbreaking Moment' category for the Sourcies, how come there isn't a 'Most Heartwarming Moment' category?

As much as I love TVD and I have never watched SPN, I think the fact that this dude is the devil merits him this category.
I just wish people voted based on clips instead of rivalry. I don't think the sourcies are good with this TVD vs SPN rubbish, it won't make anyone change their mind from whatever their favourite show is...
It's just nnoying when we get a scene from another show, like in most surprising moment, that should win instead of SPN OR TVD, I think gossip girl was the biggest ARGHOMGWTFBBQLOL moment (aka most surprising)

Lol..... TVD is a disgusting show. How anyone can like is a myistery to me.
My vote goes to Zod. He was great.

My vote goes to Katherine. Fair enough, Lucifer's not that far behind, but Katherine snags it. She's evil, alright. Just have to wait and see what more she can do in Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries. Go Katherine! =D
Posted by: Ellen | July 2, 2010 2:07 PM
Kara-> So? He was the first rebel. I don't get your point. I'm pretty sure this version is not specific to SPNverse - I've heard it before.
God did not get involved, that's true. What I'm trying to say is that Sam having this power to defeat Lucifer is just ridiculous. The only person that should be able to win is Chuck. He didn't want to be a part of this battle? I'm sorry, than the world should end. Of course, it could not end this way (as far as I know they are shooting the next season), but choosing easy solutions makes the villain look.. funny.
And they did not have to end this whole thing so quickly. I believe they did it just because Kripke will be no longer there to finish this story arc. Which is, once again, a solution that does not work for the story but for the writers.
Katie-> That's what I was trying to say. Villain with such a weakness? Underestimating the opponent? Easily distracted? Unable to understand him? Katherine doesn't have these flaws. She knows Damon and Stefan perfectly well and that's why she can play them so easily.
Posted by: Karolina | July 2, 2010 10:08 AM
Okay, you SPN fans need to calm down, really.
Posted by: Frei | July 2, 2010 9:50 AM
I love SPN and TVD, but seriously Lucifer is the best villain. Katherine is bad but she probably become more of a villain in the NEXT season.
Posted by: daydreamz | July 2, 2010 3:45 AM
@Karolina- Lucifer was thrown from Heaven because he refused to love humans more than God (if you go by Lucifer's story in Supernatural.)
"The first evil aside, if someone could win it should have been God and God alone."
BUT, God refused to step into the battle, as he told Joshua to tell the Winchesters while they were in Heaven.
As Katie said, Sam was helped by surprise. I think Lucifer underestimated him and his love for his brother (and family).
I understand that you wish they could have done more with Lucifer's character, but they've been building it all up. Even if he wasn't there in person, Lucifer was there in spirit (and talk). Plus, Lilith had to break 66 seals before he could rise. It wasn't like the writers could have her break all 66 in one episode just to have Lucifer rise sooner.
Posted by: Kara | July 1, 2010 8:02 PM
Sometimes I think they choose the wrong scenes to represent "villainy" on these thing.
I mean, why not show the scene of Lucifer slaughtering the pagan gods, or talking about filling the pit with a town full of people? Or showing the raising of Death (who is a badass character all in his own right!) Or show Lucifer not caring whatsoever about his so-called "servants/children/demons"?
Or, you know, the Lucifer!Sam scene where he snaps Future!Dean's neck, killing him like a bug? Or the whole beating-Dean-to-a-bloody-pulp thing in 5.22?
All of those show a lot more "villainy" than the bits with Sarah & Jess, as far as I'm concerned.
But either way, having seen both SPN & TVD ... I've got to say Lucifer is definitely more worthy of "Best Villain" than Katherine.
Posted by: Megan | July 1, 2010 5:13 PM
And remember that Sam was help a LOT by surprise. Lucifer didn't care about the impala...so when Sam's attention was caught by the impala, Lucifer didn't understand what was happening...and during those seconds where Lucifer was trying to understand, he was distracted
And that's why and how Sam was able to took control
Posted by: Katie | July 1, 2010 4:35 PM
Debby -> That's true, but let's not forget that, again, it's Lucifer we're talking about. According to the Bible, God is omnipotent. Lucifer, as his angel, is not as strong as God, but his willpower (!) resulted in the expulsion from heaven. He should have been able to beat Sam. The first evil aside, if someone could win it should have been God and God alone. It doesn't matter if Sam was special, he was not the second most powerful being in the whole universe. We may say a lot of things, but I don't think that it was Kripke's intention to make Lucifer look weak. But that's how he ended up. The first rebel was not as strong-willed as Sam.
Kara -> I understand the story behind this scene. And I get it, it was Kripke's last episode, he could not leave it without the ending showing the values he emphasized throughout all these seasons. But his need to show the bond between both brothers did not work well for his main villian. I assume you stay spoiler-free?^^ If not than CW TV released a short synopsis outlining the next season (and it covers what really happened to Sam).
My problem is that everything was rushed. The whole apocalypse lasted for such a short time, we had only one season of Lucifer and.. I expected something more. I suppose it depends on the perspective, but for me the writers could have done a lot more with this character.
Posted by: Karolina | July 1, 2010 4:15 PM
Also, "I get the feeling that YED was harder to defeat than the devil (Winchesters needed about 22 years to find him and 2 seasons to destroy him), so there's something wrong here."
I think this was mostly because the YED didn't WANT to be found or he was leading the Winchesters along. Lucifer was more in their face and outright taunting them with his presence. So, it was pretty easy to find him.
Posted by: Kara | July 1, 2010 3:18 PM
@Karolina- I wasn't outright claiming that you didn't watch SPN. It just seemed a bit funny for you to say that Lucifer wasn't smarter than Katherine. I understand that you can't "respect someone so easily defeated by Sam."
However, it isn't like Sam just punched Lucifer in the face, tossed him in the hole, and they were done. He was fighting the battle from the moment Lucifer entered his body. That battle came to a finish when Sam caught sight of the army figurine in the ashtray of the Impala. The love for his brother won out over Lucifer's need to kill Michael and be an ultimate ruler. That's what the writers were trying to show. They were showing that a bond built since birth trumps whatever is thrown at it. Basically good over evil or love over hate.
Although, we can't say for certain that Lucifer was defeated. We saw Sam and Adam fall into the pit, but at the end of "Swan Song" Sam (or Lucifer) stood outside Lisa's house.
Posted by: Kara | July 1, 2010 3:10 PM
Sam defeating Lucifer wasn't a matter of being 'outsmarted', first of all, it was a matter of willpower. Secondly, it wasn't Sam 'taking control of Lucifer' but taking back control of his own body which...well, it was originally his body and he is a special vessel. Plus, Sam had to drink gallons of demon blood beforehand and he had to fight tooth and nail to regain and maintain control.
Posted by: Debby | July 1, 2010 3:05 PM
Kara-> I love when those who disagree with me claim that I haven't watched their favorite show :) Relax. Everyone has the right to voice his own opinion. The fact that I'm not sharing yours does not mean that I'm not familiar with the problem.
Right, Lucifer had a plan. But I can't respect someone who was so easily defeated by Sam. The fact that he could control the devil not only makes Lucifer flawed, but also.. Come on, creature that old outsmarted by a 20-something year old guy? I find it amusing. I wouldn't have a problem with that one if it was not the devil we're talking about. He's not just some guy who happened to be on Sam's way. He's the biblical antithesis of God.

Posted by: Tanisha | July 1, 2010 9:58 AM
"Lucifer would not pull it off because he was nowhere near as smart as our Katherine."
Haha, what? Did you even watch SPN?
Lucifer should win! Not because he's the devil, but because he created some of the cruelest minions ever (Alistair, Lilith, Ruby), gave instructions to Azazel to start the whole shebang, essentially crumbled the trust between two brothers(he created Ruby who gave Sam that nifty little demon blood problem that Dean is disgusted by), and he killed multiple gods just with a flick of his hand or a stomp of his boot. He also killed two of his brothers and the future!Dean (if you haven't watched SPN you won't get that). Lucifer made the angels turn against each other. Even God sort of decided to be all, "Eh, I'm out of this one." I mean, if you don't believe the theory that Chuck is God. He is also very manipulative. He tries to get Castiel to think they're on the same side and tries to manipulate Dean by telling him the story of how he fell from grace. Not only all these things, but Lucifer also kills a whole town to bring the Horsemen Death. He brings to life the other three Horsemen as well and unleashes them. One of the Horsemen he brought to life (Pestilence) brings the Croatoan virus, which results in the end of the world. Plus, it's the way he speaks that makes him a villain. He talks like he's a good guy, manipulating people into thinking he isn't a threat, and then BAM! He'll kill you without even blinking. Besides that, Lucifer has the villain humor down pat. So, yeah. Sorry for the long comment, but I personally think Lucifer should win.
Like he said, "I win. So I win."
Posted by: Kara | July 1, 2010 1:49 AM
Let's not forget that Katherine made two brothers (who were also best friends) hate each other and she had Damon (Damon!) wrapped around her finger for the last 145 years because she could. Lucifer would not pull it off because he was nowhere near as smart as our Katherine. It says something, doesn't it? I guess it depends on your own personal definition, but my villain is not only strong, but also cunning. And the fact that he is the devil of this universe does not make him bad, it just means that he has a great potential.
Posted by: Karolina | June 30, 2010 3:04 AM
okay, come on, seriously?! there's really no competition. it's just obvious that the best villain is Lucifer from Supernatural!!! i mean really, HE'S THE FRIGGING DEVIL, AND JUST FRIGGING AWESOME!!!! you can't compare. he's evil and way more powerful than any one else from the list! i mean, really, you do not need to think about it. he'll take out every single one on the list! and you know what? true Supernatural fans would vote for Luci, HANDS DOWN!!! no questions asked, and no complaining! and come on, Lucifer kicks major ass!!!! he wins, so he wins!!

Katherine's badass but c'mon, cutting of one human's fingers is hardly in the same league as slaughtering Mercury without blinking, or sticking a sword in another archangel to kill him or persuading a nice guy to turn over his body and soul to you without lying once about how miserable it's going to be. Lucifer all the way!

Katherine because she's terrifying, super powerful, and insane.
Katie, Jen, and Georgina can't really compete. Katie was a just a loon with a gun. Jen was more spiteful then evil and Georgina is just a sociopath.

Katherine hands down.. Sorry but after the whole "sam can control THE DEVIL" just seemed to unrealistic so to be he isn't that evil and powerful..LOL
Posted by: s | June 29, 2010 12:11 PM
Normally, I would say Lucifer (aka Satan aka the Devil) has to be the Best Villain, but the way the season finale ended, the "confrontation" between Lucifer and Michael, Lucifer ended up just being a whiny little brother who was mad at his Dad (aka God). So, I had to go with a villain from another show.
Posted by: Elle | June 29, 2010 12:11 PM
The thing is, Kripke admitted that he wanted to show Lucifer in a different light. In my opinion, he did not succeed in making him "special". Ok, this guy was entertaining. But, hell, I get the feeling that YED was harder to defeat than the devil (Winchesters needed about 22 years to find him and 2 seasons to destroy him), so there's something wrong here. How can you outsmart the devil? In such a short time?
Katherine, on the other hand, is selfish, manipulative and she always gets what she wants. She's not the most wicked being in the whole universe, mind you. And she wins.
Posted by: Karolina | June 29, 2010 12:04 PM
Wow! Smallville isn't getting any love in any category. Still number 1 in my book.
Posted by: Jennifer | June 29, 2010 11:13 AM
It's hard for me to see Jen, Georgina, and Katie even comparing to the other three as threatening antagonists. Maybe it's because I've never seen those shows, but stacked up against a vampire, a supervillain, and LUCIFER...
I had to go with Lucifer on this one, though Zod was a close second for me. He outright tells Nick he's the devil and STILL convinces him to be his vessel of his own free will, massacres an entire city along with a bunch of his own demons to raise the horseman Death, killed two of his brothers, and the Colt (a gun purported to be able to kill ANYTHING) made him say 'ow'.
Posted by: Debby | June 29, 2010 10:30 AM
You'd feel a little stupid if you didn't pick Lucifer (aka THE DEVIL) as the biggest villain!!!
So Lucifer it is. Plus MP was sensational and Jared knocked his portrayl out of the park.
